Weight is the floor

A junk car's baseline value is scrap weight, and scrap prices move week to week like any commodity. A compact sedan weighs somewhere around 2,700 pounds; a full-size pickup can be double that. That difference alone is most of the gap between two offers on two different vehicles.

Completeness is the biggest swing

A complete car — engine, transmission, wheels, doors, catalytic converter all still attached — is worth substantially more than the same car with parts pulled off it. People often strip a car hoping to sell the parts separately, then find the remaining shell is worth a fraction of what the whole car would have brought. If you haven't started pulling parts, get a quote first.

The catalytic converter matters a lot

It's the single most valuable small component on most junk cars. If yours has already been cut off — which happens to parked cars in the city — say so when you call. It changes the offer, and we'd rather know up front than have the driver find out.

Running and driving adds value

If the car starts, moves and steers, it may be worth more than scrap because it can be resold or parted out rather than crushed. Even 'runs badly' is better than 'doesn't run.'

Year, make and model still count

Some vehicles have parts demand well past the point where the car itself is finished. Common trucks and popular models hold value longer than an orphaned model nobody stocks parts for.

Distance and difficulty

A car sitting in a driveway ten minutes away costs us less to collect than one buried in a garage forty minutes out. It's a smaller factor than the others, but it's real.

What to do about it

Call with an honest description. Overstating the car's condition doesn't help you — the driver confirms the vehicle in person before paying, so an inflated phone quote just wastes an afternoon. An accurate description gets you an accurate number.
