What To Do Before Your Junk Car Gets Picked Up
The pickup itself takes about ten minutes. These are the things worth doing in the hour before the truck shows up.
Empty the car properly
Glovebox, center console, door pockets, trunk, spare tire well, and under the seats. Cars that have been sitting for years hold documents, tools, spare keys and cash. Once it's on the truck it's gone.
Take the plates off
Keep them. In Illinois the plates belong to you, not the car. The driver will help if you don't have a screwdriver.
Have your ID and paperwork out
Photo ID, and the title if you have one. Having it ready is the difference between a ten-minute pickup and a phone call back to the office.
Clear the path
Move the cars parked in front of it, unlock the garage, open the gate, and let us know about narrow alleys or low clearances when you book — not when the truck arrives.
Find the keys, or say you can't
No keys is fine. But knowing in advance means the driver brings the right equipment.
Cancel the insurance — after, not before
Wait until the car is actually gone and paid for, then call your insurer and the Secretary of State so you're not paying for a vehicle you no longer own.
